French Grammar
Prepositions Aide Memoire
This section will enable you to practice prepositions which are joining words. In English they include: from, of, in, on, since, from, until, by, at, through, between, among, about, and other similar words. French uses the same ones but the tricks found on the exam are such that the exam writers highlight the differences, not the similarities, between English and French prepositions. Such tricks include the following:
- Prepositions that are used with certain verbs. We will have a separate practice exercise for these.
- Differences in use and meaning of prepositions between French and English
- The use of the infinitive after certain prepositions.
These exercises are designed to increase your vocabulary while also helping you understand the sense of the phrase—something that is critical for the reading exam and nuances on the oral exam.
Don’t be alarmed if you get many of these wrong this first time. The point of the exercise is to introduce you to the rules and tricks in testing. Our test subjects got over half wrong the first time. If you can complete these after several iterations to an 85% level, you should be on track for a C level in this topic. We recommend doing this exercise at least four times and reviewing the associated rules.
Refer to our guide on prepositions as a reference to this exercise.
